We are all called upon to make a speech sometime in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job. We may get nervous, forget what we want to say, or talk too long and bore our audience. Later we may think, “Thank goodness, it’s over. I’m not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”
. l/ B- h* x0 ]9 p2 c FIt doesn’t have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech-making. First of all, it is important to plan. Find out everything you can about your subject. And, at the same time, find out as much as you can about your audience. Who are they? Why are they coming to hear you speak? Put yourself in their shoes as you prepare your speech.0 [7 P& i q% @6 o* o; X
Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? There are many possible speaking roles, and each one has its own special characteristics. Don’t spoil your speech by confusing one speaking role with another.
) p% h6 B) k3 B- O& o( @. `When you are making your speech, try to relax. Speak slowly and clearly and look at people in your audience. Use simple vocabulary and expressions whenever possible. Pause for a few seconds now and then to give your audience a chance to think about what you have said.

Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or only there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive design is irresistible, although this method of selecting ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather uninteresting book, you soon become lost in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must hurry to keep some forgotten appointment——without buying a book, of course.% G5 F1 p* |) X4 Y; q0 h
The opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can go to such places as much as you wish. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting: “Can I help you, sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop, an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. You may want to find out where a particular section is. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. But when he has led you there, the assistant should leave politely and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book.7 h& T7 X% X, h; M) Z7 n/ y
