1. June 26, 2000—the Human Genome Project, a
great 3 billion, 15 year task aimed at drawing the
genetic map of humans, is now more than 90 percent
completed. The scientific and medical communities are
very excited about the chances genetic research
provides for getting rid of diseases and prolonging
human life. But those communities and policy makers
also are careful about the scientific door they are
opening as the project uncovers the mysteries of
life.
For the last few years, the genetic advances in
fast developing field of biotechnology(生物学) have
provided material for all kinds of work, but the
developments of modern science in unlocking the
secrets of the human genetic code have opened a world
of possibilities for human health, as well as for the
popular imagination。
While European and Japanese researchers are
making rapid progress in decoding human DNA, the
leading organization for genetic research in the US,
which began in 1990,is“unlocking the code "of the
human body to learn how to defeat fatal diseases.
Already, the Human Genome Project has become widely
known and praised for finding the genes connected
with terrible diseases, and making progress toward
separating the genes that show a sign of breast
cancer or AIDS.
Once these genes are found and studied,
researchers can develop new ways to attack
infections, and genetic diseases. Medical companies
are very interested in mapping the human genome, as
they expect to develop lots of new drugs for these
diseases.
1). Why did the scientists work hard at mapping the
Human Genome?
A. Because it can destroy many illnesses.
B. Because its completion can help them get rid of
many diseases.
C. Because it can provide a lot of chances of work.
D. Because they wanted to be better known than
others.
满分:4 分 得分:4

drawing the human genome map
D. the scientists have made great progress in
connecting the genes with the cancers

2. Why are so many people so afraid of
failure? Quite simply, because we forget that failure
is part of the human condition and every person has
the right to fail.
Most parents work hard at either preventing
failure or protecting their children from the
knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower
standards. A mother describes her child’s hand-made
table as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand
still. Another way is to shift(转移) blame. If John
fails science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
The trouble with failure-prevention devices(策
略) is that they leave a child unequipped for life in
the real world. The young need to learn that no one
can be best at everything, no one can win all the
time --- and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even
when they don’t win. A child who’s not invited to a
birthday party feels terrible, of course. But parents
should not offer a quick consolation(安慰) or say, “
It doesn’t matter.” because it does. The young
should be allowed to experience disappointment and be
helped to master it.
Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-
ups and children alike. But it can make a positive(积
极的) contribution to your life once you learn to use
it.
Don’t blame someone else. Ask yourself what
you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else
can help, don’t be shy about asking. Success is not
nearly as good a teacher as failure. You can learn
from a bad party how to give a good one. Even a
failure that seems definitive can prompt fresh
thinking, a change of direction. After 12 years old
of studying ballet, a friend of mine interviewed for
a professional company. She was turned down. In such
cases, the way to failure is to use failure is to
take stock(鉴定) bravely asking “What else can I do?
”. My friend put away her shoes and moved into a
dance treatment center, a field where she’s both
able and useful. Failure frees one to take risks
because there’s less to lose. Often there is
recovery(恢复) of energy—a way to find new
possibilities.
1). The second paragraph mainly tells us .
A. how parents encouraged their children when they
had failed
B. how most parents responded to their children’s
failure
C. how to shift blame
D. how to properly prevent children’s failure.

2). According to the text, what should a child know
in the real world?

success.

3. Three lawyers and three engineers were
traveling by train to a conference. At the station,
the three lawyers each bought tickets and watched
that the three engineers bought only a single ticket.
“How are three people going to travel on only
one ticket?” asked one of the lawyers.
“Watch and you will see,” answered one of the
engineers.
They all boarded the train. The lawyers took
their respective(分别的,各自的) seats but all three
engineers crammed(填满) into a restroom and closed
the door behind them. Shortly after the train had
departed, the conductor came around collecting
tickets. He knocked on the restroom door and said, “
Ticket, please.” The door opened just a crack(裂缝)
and a single arm emerged(显现) with a ticket in hand.
The conductor took it and moved on. The lawyers saw
this and agreed it was quite a clever idea.
So after the conference, the lawyers decided to
copy the engineers on the return trip and save some
money. When they got to the station, they bought a

astonishment, the engineers didn’t buy a ticket at
all.
“How are you going to travel without a ticket?”
asked one perplexed lawyers.
“Watch and you’ll see,” said one of the
engineers.

crammed into a restroom and the three engineers
crammed into another one nearby. The train departed.

restroom and walked over to the restroom where the
lawyers were hiding. He knocked on the door and said,
