二、阅读理解(共 3 道试题,共 60 分。)V 1.      Astronaut Jim Voss has enjoyed many memorable moments in his career, including three space flights and one space walk. But he recalls with special fondness a decidedly earthbound(为地球引力所束缚的) experience in the summer of 1980 when he participated in the NASA ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program. Voss, then a science teacher at West Point, was assigned to the Marshall Space Flight Center's propulsion lab in Alabama to analyze why a hydraulic fuel pump seal on the space shuttle was working so well when previous seals had failed. It was a seemingly tiny problem among the vast complexities of running the space program. Yet it was important to NASA because any crack in the seal could have led to destructive results for the astronauts who relied on them.
?“I worked a bit with NASA engineers,” says Voss, “but I did it mostly by analysis. I used a handheld calculator, not a computer, to do a thermodynamic(热力学的) analysis.” At the end of the summer, he, like the other NASA ASEE fellows working at Marshall, summarized his findings in a formal presentation and detailed paper. It was a valuable moment for Voss because the ASEE program gave him added understanding of NASA, deepened his desire to fly in space, and intensified his application for astronaut status.
It was not an easy process. Voss was actually passed over when he first applied for the astronaut program in 1978. Over the next nine years he reapplied repeatedly, and was finally accepted in 1987. Since then he has participated in three space missions. The 50-year-old Army officer, who lives in Houston, is now in training for a four-month mission as a crew member on the International Space Station starting in July 2000.
Voss says the ASEE program is wonderful for all involved. “It brings in people from the academic world and gives NASA a special property for a particular period of time. It brings some fresh eyes and fresh ideas to NASA, and establishes a link with our colleges and universities,” Voss explains. “There's an exchange of information and an exchange of perspectives that is very important.”
For the academic side, Voss says, the ASEE program also “brings institutions of higher learning more insight into new technology. We give them an opportunity to work on real world problems and take it back to the classroom.”

1). Why was the hydraulic fuel pump seal important for the space shuttle?
A. Because previous seals all failed.
B. Because it was very complex in running the space program.
C. Because great care has to be taken of the hydraulic fuel pump sealing.
D. Because any crack in the seals would cause disastrous results for the astronauts.
      满分:4  分
2). The great significance of Voss's findings lies in:
A. strengthening his determination to join in space flights
B. furthering his understanding of NASA
C. consolidating his astronaut status in NASA programs

3). How many flights will Voss have finished if his four-month mission starting in July 2000 ends up successfully?

2.      Having raised eight children of my own, I know the dilemma (左右为难) parents face. In a world increasingly hostile to children, we want to show we care by acting on our loving impulses, which usually means spending. But when our kids came home asking for the latest designer wear, my wife and I knew we had to say “no” more often than not. Of course, deciding to have no TV in the house was the first real breakthrough; I doubt we would have won this battle without freeing ourselves from its influence.
As a child, I grew up in what I now see was poverty. For the first few years of my life, I ate only the smallest amount. Yet, I would find it hard to imagine a happier childhood. Why? Because my parents gave us children time and attention on a daily basis. For instance, no matter how busy they were, they tried to eat breakfast with us before we went off to school each morning.
No child should have to live in poverty. But I firmly believe that the happiness of a child does not depend on his or her access (接近) to material wealth. After all, it is the love we give our children, and not the things, that will remain with them for life.
Having worked thirty years as a family counselor, I know that parents really do love their children, and want to do what is best for them. But what does it mean to give a child love? Next time you feel that you have failed your kids, and are tempted to relieve those feelings by bringing home gifts, remember that we can’t buy our children’s affection. All they really want, and need, is time and attentiveness, a listening ear and an encouraging word. These are things every parent can provide.

1). What the author most concerns about is _________________.
A. how to make children pleased
B. how to give children the true love
C. how to educate his children
D. how to meet the children’s needs

D. Every parent has the ability to provide love for his or her children.
      满分:4  分
3). In Paragraph 1, when the author says, “But when our kid…we had to say ‘no’ more often than not”, he means ___________________.
A. he could not afford too much
B. in order not to spoil his children, he must refuse them
C. though he loved his children, he didn’t always satisfy their material needs

D. he wanted to fight against his children
      满分:4  分

3.      Nuclear power’s danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation.
Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It can’t be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.
At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being outright by killing masses of cells in vital organs. But even the lowest level of radiation can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed outright. Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.
This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or liable to serious illness as result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.
Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.

1). According to the author, the danger of nuclear power lies in ________.
A. nuclear mystery
B. radiation detection
C. nuclear radiation
D. radiation level
      满分:4  分
2). Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Radiation can cause serious consequences at high levels.
B. Radiation may not cause serious problems when only a few cells are hit and if they are killed outright.

D. Radiation can be safe at the lowest level.
      满分:4  分
3). The word “significant” in paragraph 3 has the similar meaning with ________.
A. fatal
B. meaningful
C. harmful
D. remarkable
      满分:4  分
4). Radiation can hurt us in that it can _______.
A. affect the healthy growth of our offspring
B. damage cells which may grow into cancer years later
C. kill large numbers of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately
