English as an international language
English is spoken as a first language in over forty countries around the world. The expert David Crystal estimates that in 1997, there were a little over 377 million people who speak English as a first language. Crystal also estimates that English plays a significant part in the lives of about a third of the human race. This is not really surprising, because of the 75 countries in the world where English has a special status, some of the most highly populated are former colonies of Britain. Countries in this category include India and Nigeria.
There are three kinds of English speaker in the world: there are those who speak it as their first language, or "mother tongue" as it is sometimes called, there are those who speak it as a second language: these are people who need English for one reason or another in their own country - perhaps as the language of government, or business or education. Countries in this category include Nigeria, India, South Africa and Pakistan. Finally, there are people who use English as a foreign language; they do not normally need it in their own country, except under special situations; but they often need it when travelling abroad, or when they meet foreigners in their own country. These are people who speak English as a foreign language. (222 words )
