Freedmanandhiscolleaguesundertookthebiggeststudyyettolookattherelationshipbetweencoffeeandhealth.Theyanalyzeddatacollectedfrommorethan400,000Americansages50to71participatinginthestudy.“Wefoundthatthecoffeedrinkershadamodestlylowerriskofdeaththanthenon-drinkers,”hesaid.Here’swhathemeansby“modestly”:thosewhodrankatleasttwoorthreecupsadaywereabout10percentor15percentlesslikelytodieforanyreasonduringthe13yearsofthestudy.Whentheresearcherslookedatspecificcausesofdeath,coffeedrinkingappearedtocuttheriskofdyingfromheartdisease,lungdisease,injuries,accidentsandinfections.
