Directions: There are twelve passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.
1).        Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations - the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases. Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.

2).        Passage 2 Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage: When I was a little girl, my brothers and I collected stamps for many years. My mother didn't use to work during the week, but she worked in the post office near our house on Saturdays, and she used to bring home all the new stamps as soon as they were issued (发行). On the day of the World Cup football final in London in 1966, we were very excited because England were playing West Germany in the final. When we were having lunch, my mother told us to go to the post office straightaway after the match if England won, but she didn't tell us why. At 2 o'clock my mother went back to work as usual, while the rest of the family were watching the football on TV at home. Although she wasn't watching the match, she was listening to it on the radio. England won 4:2 and so my brothers and I ran to the post office. As we burst in, my mother was standing behind the counter. She was waiting to sell us a very special limited edition with ENGLAND WINNERS on each stamp. We were over the moon. We still have it today, and perhaps it is worth a lot of money.

3).        Passage 3 Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage: Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.

11.        Which of the following statements is NOT true?_________

A.         People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.
B.         People who work in London prefer to live in the country.
C.         Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.
D.         Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.

4).        Passage 4 Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage: There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals. Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.

16.        Our long-term goals mean a lot _______.

A.         if we cannot reach solid short-term goals

5).        Passage 5 Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage: What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works. The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigations, and Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

21.        What makes a scientist according to the passage? ________

A.         The tools he uses.
B.         The way he uses his tools.

6).        Passage 6 Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage: When John and Victoria Falls arrived in New York City for one-year stay, they did not bring very many things with them. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting of home furnishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America’s fastest growing businesses. What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international business or government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couples - people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city to another. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy. One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. But usually people don’t like to tell others about it. The idea of renting home furnishings is still quite new, and they are not sure what their neighbors might think.

7).        Passage 7 Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage: The Spring Festival together with the winter holidays often means sharing cakes, candies and other delicious food with friends and families. Most people will eat more than they usually do. But doctors find out that what you eat may affect how well you remember things. This is bad news for people who eat too much. Forgetfulness seems to many people an inevitable part of aging. As our bodies grow older, most of us find that many things we should remember are slipping out of minds. But new facts show that it is possible to slow time's effects on our minds. Once people thought that the brain could not make new cells, but now studies show that learning new things can help brain grow and keep the illness away from the brain. Professor Eric Kandel, a Nobel Prize winner for his study of the human memory, says the best way to save our memories is to keep our brains in good shape. Through mental exercise, he says, people can keep their memories well into their 80s and 90s. And Mark Mattson, a professor at the National Institute on Aging, says that reducing the amount of calories fed to older rats and mice by thirty percent can be a good help to learning and memory. While it is hard for many people to go on their diet like that, doctors tell us that even small steps can make big difference.

8).        Passage 8 Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage: According to a Xinhua News Agency report, residents of China's five largest cities spent about 643 Yuan (US$80.37) each on sport in 2005, with Beijing topping the survey at about 880 Yuan (US$110) per person. (The five cities were Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Chengdu). Chinese are more willing to part with hard-earned cash in pursuit (追求) of fitness than they were ten yeas ago. In addition to participating in a variety of fitness (健康) classes, many are now even seeking private training. Almost every new fitness or entertainment (娱乐) product or idea finds a willing audience among the public, whether riding bicycles or engaging in "hot" yoga. A young organizer of a Beijing folding-bicycle club said, "We take exercise not only for our own fitness, but considering our social responsibilities. For example, every day we ride folding bicycles to and from our work places. This is our way of helping reduce pollution in Beijing. " The city’s elderly actively participate in many of the city’s sports teams. In the early mornings in the park, it is easy to meet groups of the elderly using the national fitness facilities or practising taiji and kendo. One participant said," we do not want to bring any burden to our children, so we care more about our health than ever before."

9).        Passage 9 Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage: One summer, the library in Texas in the United States was having a terrible problem. It had grown too big for its building and had to move to a newly-built library across town. Everything was finished and paid for, the librarians(图书馆人员) found out that they hadn't left enough money to move their mountains of books across the town. Even the cheapest moving company was going to ask for several hundred thousand dollars to pack and move the books. What could they do? Finally one clever librarian had a bright idea. She said the move was going to take all summer and during that time, the library would be closed. Why not ask everyone to come in to borrow 20, 40, or 100 books? At the end of the summer they could return them-to the new library. The idea worked beautifully and not only did the library save a lot of money, but also people read a lot of books.

10).        Passage 10 Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage: Do you know something about tree rings(年轮)? Do you know they can tell us what the weather was like, sometimes even hundreds of years ago? A tree will grow well in a climate with lots of sunshine and rainfall(雨量). And little sunshine or rainfall will limit(限制)the growth of a tree. We can see the change of climate by studying the tree rings. For example, to find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we're sure that it was sunny and rainy most of that year. If it is near to the eleventh ring, then the climate that year was bad. Tree rings are important not only for studying the history of weather but also for studying the history of man. Many centuries ago there live a lot of people at a place in New Mexico. But now you can find only sand there—no trees and no people. What happened? A scientist studied the rings of dead trees there. He found that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees to make fires and buildings. As all the trees had gone, the people there had to move.

11).        Passage 11 Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage: No one is glad to hear that his body has to be cut open by a surgeon and part of it taken out. Today, however, we needn't worry about feeling pain during the operation. The sick person falls into a kind of sleep, and when he awakes, the operation is finished. But these happy conditions are fairly new. It is not many years since a man who had to have operation felt all its pain. Long ago, operation had usually to be done while the sick man could feel everything. Soon after 1770, Josept Priestley discovered a gas which is now called "laughing gas". Laughing gas became known in America. Young men and women went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time laughing, but one man at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people didn't seem to feel pain when they were using this gas. He decided to make an experiment on himself. He asked a friend to help him. Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well's teeth. Wells felt no pain at all. As he didn't know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas than he should have. The man cried out with pain when his tooth was being pulled out. Wells tried again, but this time he gave too much of the gas, and the man died. Wells never forgot this terrible event.

12).        Passage 12 Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage: In the high mountain country outside the city of Toluker, there stands a prison. This prison is quite different from other prisons in the world. The guards, except for two at the main gate, are not armed. There are many remarkable things about Toluker prison. For example, of the 15,000 individuals who have been in prison at Toluker, less than two percent have got into trouble again with the law. Men in the open prison are free to find work outside, but go back to prison each night. On weekends they are allowed to go home. When most other prisons are still sending criminals back into society, Toluker is returning people who stand on their own feet and contribute to society. In 1974, a prisoner called Barb Crook moved to the open prison. A year later, he left Toluker for the last time. He was then nearly forty-six and had been in prison for fourteen years. He got a job as construction worker in the city, remarried and was regarded as a useful person of his community. If you ask Bob why Toluker works, he would say, "Because they believed in me when I was at my worst."

3).        For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, inter-office communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In __71__ a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are __72__ readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never get over them. The main problem __73__ in the actual stuff of language itself-words. Taken individually, words have little meaning until they are strung(连成) together into phrased, sentences and paragraphs. __74__, however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He laboriously reads one word at a time, often regressing(倒退) to reread words or passages. Regression, the tendency to look back over what you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which __75__ down the speed of reading is vocalization-sounding(用言语表达) each word either orally or mentally as one reads.

6).        As she walked round the large shop, Edith realized how difficult it was to choose a suitable Christmas gift for her father. She wished that he were as easy to please as her mother, who was __86__ satisfied with perfume. Besides, shopping at this time of the year was a most unhappy job. People stepped on your feet, pushed you with their shoulders and almost knocked you over in their hurry in order to __87__ something cheap ahead of you. Partly to have a rest, Edith paused in front of a counter, where some beautiful ties were on show. "They are __88__ silk," the shop assistant told her with a smile trying to persuade her to buy one. But Edith knew from past experience that her choice of ties hardly ever pleased her father. She moved on slowly and then, quite by chance, stopped where a small crowd of men had gathered round a counter. She found some fine pipes on sale and the shapes were very beautiful. Edith did not hesitate for long, although her father __89__ smoked a pipe once in a while, she believed this was certainly to please him. When she got home, with her small but well-chosen present hidden in her handbag, it was time for supper and her parents were already at table. Her mother was in great __90__. "Your father has at last decided to stop smoking," she told her daughter happily. Edith was so surprised that she could not say a single word.
