Instructions: In this section, 2 situations in classroom teaching are provided. In each situation there is a problem. Firstly, identify the problem; secondly, provide your own solution according to communicative language teaching principles and explain in detail. The word limit for the elaboration is 50-70 words.
Situation 1
In a junior high English class, the students are doing some listening practice. The teacher uses a recording of a monologue, in which a man is talking about his career success. As a while-listening task, the teacher gives the students some questions that ask them to draw out inferences about the situation of the speech and the speaker’s relationship with his boss. The students, however, have little to say and keep quiet most of the time.
Situation 2
In a high school listening class, the teacher is ready to play the recording of a lecture on recent discoveries in cancer research. Before she starts, she writes the potential new words on the blackboard and explains them one by one. Then she plays the tape and asks the students to decide whether some statements on a handout are true or false. The students have great difficulty completing the task and look discouraged.
