' f; ]8 @' t6 O4 F4 @, U' PWhy is setting goals important?Because goals can help you do, be, and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen.# k& x; o0 x; ^6 a
Successful people ____11____ how their life should be and then set lots of goals. By setting goals you are ___12____ your life. It’s like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it this way. There are ____13____ drivers. One has a destination in mind (her goal) which can be found on a map. She can drive straight there without any ____14____ time or wrong turns. The other driver has no goal or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver, ____15____ she drives aimlessly around, never getting where, just using up gas. Which driver do you want to be?
. n& ?+ A5 m$ k# k7 G; ~: }% XWinners in life set goals and follow through on them. They decide what they want in life and then get there by making ____16____ and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren’t difficult to set and they aren’t difficult to reach. It’s up to you to find out what your goals really are. You are the one who must ____17____ what to achieve and in what direction to aim your life.

American society is not nap (午睡) friendly. In fact, says David Dinges, a sleep specialist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. "There's even a prohibition against admitting we need sleep". Nobody wants to be caught napping or found asleep at work. To quote a proverb: "Some sleep five hours, nature requires seven, laziness nine and wickedness eleven."
. n5 t! T: Q' b0 Z+ H: k" u; SWrong. The way not to fall asleep at work is to take naps when you need them. "We have to totally change our attitude toward napping", says Dr. William Dement of Stanford University, the godfather of sleep research.4 \$ n! I1 }* n. U' D
Last year a national commission led by Dement identified an "American sleep debt" which one member said was as important as the national debt. The commission was concerned about the dangers of sleepiness: people causing industrial accidents or falling asleep while driving. This may be why we have a new sleep policy in the White House. According to recent reports, president Clinton is trying to take a half hour snooze (打瞌睡) every afternoon.
2 X3 t: ^; Z& z  X) j* y- n; RAbout 60 percent of American adults nap when given the opportunity. We seem to have "a mid-afternoon quiet phase "also called" a secondary sleep gate. "Sleeping 15 minutes to two hours in the early afternoon can reduce stress and make us refreshed. Clearly, we were born to nap.
0 p, ~0 N1 U, C, q! cWe Superstars of Snooze don't nap to replace lost shut eye or to prepare for a night shift. Rather, we "snack" on sleep, whenever, wherever and at whatever time we feel like it. I myself have napped in buses, cars, planes and on boats; on floors and beds; and in libraries, offices and museums.

- a9 `- a, |0 `; G3 s8 T5 _A number of recent books have reworked subjects, forms and writing techniques. Today's children read stories about divorce, death, drugs, air pollution, political extremism and violence. Relying on the magic of the illustrator, all kinds of books are being published.5 h9 H9 c2 w5 {2 o2 h& \
Before they know to read, babies can play with books made of cloth or books made to take in the bath. Later on, they are given picture books that may be cubical(立方形的)or triangular, outsized or very small. They also like work-books which come with watercolors and paintbrushes, and comic books(漫画册)filled with details where they have to spot a figure hidden among thousands of others.
& y& u1 e$ P3 e* Z, TNot that the traditional children's books are being neglected. There are still storybooks where the pages pop up(跳起)when they are opened, to make a forest or a castle. Among the latest ideas are interactive stories where readers choose the plot(情节)or end they want, and books on CD, which are very popular in rich industrialized countries.% c" g# y# ]$ ?* w: M
The public has enthusiastically greeted the wealth of creativity displayed by publishers. "Previously, giving a child a book as often seen as improper," says Canadian author Marie-France Hebért. Her books, published by a French-language publisher, sell like hot cakes in hundreds of thousands of copies. "There's a real appetite for reading these days and I try to get across to children the passion for reading which is food for the mind and the heart, like a medicine or a vitamin."
