Instruction: In this section, 2 situations in classroom teaching are provided. In each situation there is a problem. Firstly, identify the problem; secondly, provide your own solution according to communicative language teaching principles and explain in detail. The word limit for the elaboration is 50-70 words.
Situation 1
The teacher is going over some new words in a text about the extinction of ancient animals. When she comes to the word “dinosaur,” she gives an explanation in English. The students don’t seem to understand what exactly it is, and look at each other in confusion. The teacher explains again in Chinese, but the students still look puzzled. What advice would you give to the teacher to help her students understand the word better?

Situation 2

After studying a text about space technology, the teacher designs some revision activities for students to practice the new terms they have just learned. She asks that the students not only understand these words, but also use them. The students, however, are not very interested in these activities and keep silent most of the time. What do you think accounts for students’ lack of motivation?
